Is AI interview practice worth it?

AI mock interviews are everywhere, but do they actually help you perform better in a real interview? The honest answer is: yes, for some things, and not as a replacement for others.

What AI interview practice does well

  • You practise out loud. Speaking your answers is very different from thinking them through. It exposes rambling, long pauses and filler words.
  • It is available whenever you are. You can practise at midnight or on your commute, as often as you like.
  • It is low-pressure to fail. Mistakes in practice cost nothing, so you can try harder questions.
  • It gives consistent feedback. You see scores and patterns across sessions, such as speaking pace and how often you use filler words.
  • It can be tailored. You can give it your CV and the job description so the questions fit the role.

Where it falls short

  • It is not a real person. Real interviewers vary in mood, style and interruptions, and an AI cannot fully reproduce human chemistry.
  • Feedback is guidance, not a verdict. Treat scores as a pointer to what to work on, not a prediction of the outcome.
  • It cannot know the company's inside story. Research the employer yourself.
  • Practice only helps if you act on it. Review the feedback, adjust your answers and try again.

How to get the most from a mock interview

  1. Use the real job description. Practise for a specific role, not a generic one.
  2. Vary the difficulty. Start friendly, then try a tougher interviewer. EnDev offers four personas, from friendly to executive, and a Grill Mode.
  3. Try audio only. Many first-round screens are phone calls, so practise without visual cues. EnDev's Blind Mode does this.
  4. Review every answer. Compare your answer with the model answer and note one change per question.
  5. Repeat. Do the same question again and see whether your score improves.
  6. Add a human. Follow up with a friend or mentor for a final run-through.

Who benefits most?

  • First-time and returning job seekers who have not been interviewed for a while and want to rebuild confidence.
  • Career changers who need to explain transferable skills clearly.
  • Non-native speakers who want to practise answering fluently. EnDev supports 12 languages.
  • Anyone facing a technical or senior interview who wants to rehearse challenging follow-up questions.
  • People made redundant, many of whom need quick, flexible preparation.

What to look for in a practice tool

  1. Voice practice, not just typed answers.
  2. Feedback that explains why an answer scored the way it did, with a model answer to compare.
  3. The ability to use your own CV and a real job description.
  4. Clear pricing, ideally pay-as-you-go so you are not locked into a subscription.
  5. A way to repeat questions and track improvement over time.

So, is it worth it?

If you want regular, low-pressure speaking practice and structured feedback, yes. It will not replace human coaching or real interview experience, but it helps you arrive better prepared. You can try an AI mock interview with EnDev from £4.99, with credits that never expire.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can AI predict whether I will get the job?

No. A score reflects your answer quality and delivery in the practice session. Real outcomes depend on many other factors, including competition and fit.

How many mock interviews should I do?

Several. Many people do one baseline session, work on the feedback, then repeat before the real interview to see improvement.

Is practising with AI better than practising with a friend?

They complement each other. AI is available any time and gives structured feedback. A friend or mentor can offer human reactions and personal insight.
